Border Work

Border Work, “Threshold” Exhibition, Gonzo Unit, Thessalonikki, Greece, plastic and steel, 49″ x 108″ x 6″, 2018

In 2018 My friend Anna Schwanz was working on an exhibition for Gonzo Unit in Thessalonikki, Greece and invited me to participate. I really love opportunities to exhibit internationally. It’s a chance to make new friends all over the world (I met Anna in Nottingham, England in 2011 when dong an exhibition for Surface Gallery), experience other cultures from the inside out and expand your CV. One of the constraints of exhibiting internationally is you know the work is either going to have to be shipped or created on-site. For some reason traveling for this exhibition was out of the question (work schedules, I think?) so the piece needed to be compress-able and as lightweight as possible. I had been working with plastic sheeting for a while, creating envelopes inflated with air or helium, and wanted to use this medium in a new way. I cut the plastic into strips tied end to end and basically crocheted it into the shapes I wanted using my forearm as a crochet hook. I ended up making several pieces in this series before it kind of exhausted itself.
