Exterior night view of A Community of Non-Normative Beings at Access Gallery in Austin, TX, January, 2011
I’ve talked about VSA Arts in my posts about the Revealing Culture exhibition at The Smithsonian. There are also state VSA organizations and the Texas branch is in Austin. At one point they had a very nice little storefront gallery – Access Gallery. They put out a call for art and I submitted a proposal for an installation called A Community of Non-Normative Beings. This was my first opportunity to do a solo show, so really VSA, the national organization and the Texas organization, gave me two of my biggest breaks as an artist. This exhibition included a number of the blobby plastic pieces described elsewhere on this website, such as Monstrous Birth. Drips and Constrained, as well as different arrangements of the fabric windsock elements. The nice thing about making art that is composed of multiple smaller units is that you can create endless new compositions adapting to different sites, themes or situations. Above is a photograph of the gallery at night during the opening reception.
