This piece started out as a simple drawing exercise. I was trying to draw a representation of the cochlea, the organ in the inner ear that is responsible for hearing, and as I worked on perfecting that interesting coiled shape, I began to think of other objects and motifs that correspond to those curves; a snail shell, the Starship Enterprise, a hissing snake, the yin yang symbol… I ended up enjoying the way these images tied together so much that I cleaned up the idea in a finished version on a piece of gray packing paper, which I chose for its textural interest.
In 2019, Cochlear Americas, which is the company that manufactures my cochlear implants, put out a call for art to decorate their headquarters campus in Lone Tree, Colorado. I submitted a number of pieces that were related to hearing in one way or another and this piece is one of those that were accepted. Cochlear created a beautiful website which shows all of the artwork that was accepted, along with statements by the artists:
