Snow Garden, Box 13 Artspace, Houston, Texas, 2015

sugar, polyester organza, found cast iron objects

In 2015 I submitted a proposal to Box 13 Artspace in Houston to do an installation in their little window box gallery. It would be called Snow Garden and feature the cast sugar pieces I had been working on. They accepted my proposal, with the one requirement that I have an exterminator come in and spray before and after the show, as they’d had some pest problems in the past and wanted to be sure having a couple of hundred pounds of sugar lying around for a month didn’t revive the problem. I thought that was more than reasonable and agreed. Installation work is so much fun. You basically show up with a truck full of the pieces you’ve submitted and anything else you’re going to need and spend a couple of days just playing in the space. The volunteers working at Box 13 were wonderful and the whole thing was a great experience. We went back for the opening reception and everyone was so friendly. I remember it as one of those charmed evenings sitting around drinking wine and chatting about art with other people who love it as much as you do.
