fabric, steel cable, other media

I originally created these windsock-like units for an outside installation at The University of Texas at Arlington in 2009 while working on my Masters in Intermedia Studio Art. It was during a time that I was exploring the idea of wind as a metaphor for uncontrollable change in our lives and also researching the concept of The Sublime. Over the years I exhibited the windsocks in a number of different settings, both inside and outside, arranged in different configurations, sometimes using all of them, sometimes a smaller subset. From an artistic standpoint, it was interesting to me how changing the venue and arrangement of an installation causes it to take on a whole different set of meanings. From a purely practical standpoint, I realized that if you fabricate a single unit that is interesting in itself in color and texture, and then produce multiples, you give yourself a great deal of flexibility to play with that idea — it has “legs.”
